A course on bird identification taking advantage of all the activity at the start of the new breeding season. We’ll visit some of the best birdwatching sites in Suffolk to learn about bird characteristics and behaviour.

By observing birds closely and listening to their songs and calls you'll become much more confident in identifying a wide range of common and scarcer species.

We will be watching and listening for birds around Flatford and on visits to other local sites in south Suffolk.

Weather permitting, part of the course will be based at the Flatford bird ringing site, so that we can discuss identification issues in some detail by seeing birds in close-up.

The content is also appropriate for anyone wishing to contribute to their Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements.

Steve Piotrowski is one of the most experienced birders in Suffolk and author of the acclaimed The Birds of Suffolk.

He is an environmental consultant working mainly on ways of increasing the populations of threatened and protected species such as barn owl, turtle dove and tree sparrow. He has worked as an Associate Tutor with FSC at Flatford Mill for over 10 years.

‘Brilliant tutor, knowledgeable and patient, very attentive. Relaxed and humorous’. Course participant April 2011.
