Using a GPS for the first time can seem a bit overwhelming; however training allows GPS to be exploited with confidence. This course is aimed at anyone, irrespective of previous experience, who is required, or would like, to use a GPS ‘in the field’. The second day helps consolidate the skills learned on day one by getting you to use the GPS for a specific task. This task could be one that you would like to develop for a need you already have or one of the following: Laying and recording sampling/test locations that would need to be revisited by someone who had not been there before and presenting these positions in an appropriate manner. Recording of habitat areas and transferring this information to a map and electronic file. Producing simple footpath maps.
Presenting positioning information on an OS map, or electronic files (including simple Shapefiles), digital maps and tables.
Jim Butcher has been using GPS to help him navigate his bike, feet, skis and Land Rover through the wilds of the UK, Europe and Africa for over 10 years. He has been mapping the seabed in the offshore survey industry for the last 14 years, and when on dry land has spent six years as an instructor for Land Rover.
