Many botanists record wild plants in the countryside without really thinking about the vegetation in which they occur. The main aim of this course is to encourage people to think in terms of recognising the repeated occurrence of plant communities using the National Vegetation Classification. To use the NVC, familiarity with some basic terms and concepts used in phytosociology is required. These will be fully explained in the introductory lecture.
We shall see a range of lowland and upland communities including common and widespread types as well as some rarer ones of significant conservation importance. Recording and sampling communities will be practised and field data will be tabulated and analysed. The use of keys and community tables will be made to identify field samples and we shall be using the computer software MATCH to aid identification. You will need to be reasonably fit but we shall avoid very steep slopes - although anybody with acute vertigo should make it known.
Ben Averis is a consultant botanist who has been using the NVC for 21 years. He is a co-author of An Illustrated Guide to British Upland Vegetation (JNCC 2004).
