Field Studies Council: Bringing Environmental Understanding to All

Mosses and Liverworts

  • Shared Room: £405
  • Sole Occupancy: £475
  • Non-Resident: £356

This course will take full advantage of the ideal location of Kindrogan at the heart of some of the richest bryophyte communities in Britain. Daily fieldwork will include some splendid woodland, glens, lochs, mountains, wetlands, rivers and streams.

A major aim will be to develop the skills and knowledge which are as necessary for the professional use of this ecologically important group of plants as they are for amateur enjoyment of mosses and liverworts. Emphasis will be placed on field characteristics, backed up by work in the laboratory, including the use of identification keys. There will also be opportunities to concentrate on special interests, as individual guidance will be given at all levels.

Martha Newton, a very experienced course tutor, is a biological consultant specialising in bryophytes, with wide experience of teaching at all level, and was until recently an Honorary Lecturer in Botany at Manchester University. Teaching, she places strong emphasis on field characters and ecological indicators, encourages confidence in the use of keys, and endeavours to make her field courses as enjoyable as they are useful.
