Field Studies Council: Bringing Environmental Understanding to All

Getting to Know Wild Flowers

  • Non-Resident: £170
  • Sole Occupancy: £248
  • Shared Room: £228

Wild flower identification is a wonderful hobby and has become an important skill, as we try to monitor the changes in our flora and conserve our native wild plants. This course is for people who enjoy naming wild flowers, generally by matching the pictures, but who would like to be able to use a more structured approach. We will spend the weekend plant-hunting in the beautiful Shropshire countryside then use the Centre's facilities to study the intricate structure of flowers with specimens and slides. You will see how plants are grouped into families, which makes identification much easier. You will also be able to practise using a x10 handlens, and to look at the various illustrated floras that are available for beginners and more advanced botanists.

Brenda Harold has tutored many wild flower courses for different organisations and is an active Wildlife Trust volunteer. She is a qualified botanist and a retired university lecturer.
