This course is designed to help students in developing higher level field bryology skills. It will include teaching familiarity with the characteristics of the main groups of mosses and liverworts and identification of species from several different habitats and constructing keys to aid identification. There will be a mixture of fieldwork (with guidance on how to collect, observe and record in the field) and laboratory sessions, plus talks on identification, use of keys and microscopy. This course is part of the MSc in Biological Recording run by the University of Birmingham.

Nick Hodgetts, a professional botanist with over 25 years of bryological experience, is a freelance botanist specialising in lower plants. Previously he worked as Botanical Advisor with the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC), he has also worked with county naturalist trusts and co-wrote the New Naturalist guide. He has recently produced a revised Red List of bryophytes in Britain. He currently lives in the Isle of Skye and works on bryophyte surveys, monitoring and ecological assessments for hydro schemes
