Field Studies Council: Bringing Environmental Understanding to All

Introduction to Solitary Bees

  • Non-Resident: £170
  • Sole Occupancy: £248
  • Shared Room: £228

Solitary Bees are the focus of this weekend identification course. Emphasis will be placed on field identification but there will be ample opportunity to study and identify prepared specimens using entomological keys and microscopes. Time will be spent in the field over the weekend to enable bees to be caught and identified before release. Presentations will be given to explain ecology and conservation as well as a general introduction to the other insects that make up this sub-order of Hymenoptera. At the end of the course everyone should be able to confidently identify some of the more common species of solitary bees and have a knowledge of their requirements.

Ian Cheeseborough is a self-employed entomologist. He has been studying aculeate Hymenoptera - bees, wasps and ants - for the past 11 years and is county recorder for this group of insects. He is in the process of writing a county atlas of aculeate Hymenoptera for Shropshire.
