Field Studies Council: Bringing Environmental Understanding to All

Shropshire Wildflower Weekend

  • Non-Resident: £235
  • Shared Room: £304
  • Sole Occupancy: £334

We will visit examples of the species-rich grasslands, heaths, fens and bogs in south, central and northern Shropshire. We will explore key sites intensively rather than walk long distances. The course will have a maximum of 15 participants and will be designed to be both an introduction for relative beginners and a consolidation of previous knowledge for developing botanists.

After completing the course you will
- know and recognise some of the key plant species in the habitats we visit (including grasses, sedges and rushes)
- be aware of the ecological conditions to which they are adapted, and understand how they characterise different habitats and vegetation types
- have an appreciation of the origins, management, beauty and wider significance of the sites we visit.

Ian Trueman is Emeritus Professor of Plant Ecology at the University of Wolverhampton, conservationist and joint author of An Ecological Flora of the Shropshire Region and The Flora of Montgomeryshire and the new Birmingham and Black Country Flora.

He has a passion for botany and wild flowers and a lifelong botanical knowledge of Shropshire.
