Field Studies Council: Bringing Environmental Understanding to All

Surveying Hedgerows for their Wildlife and History

  • Non-Resident: £170
  • Sole Occupancy: £248
  • Shared Room: £228

This hedgerow course is aimed at anyone (both amateurs and professionals) with an interest in hedgerow wildlife and history. A number of survey techniques are currently available and these will be covered during the course, including Hedgerow Regulations 1997 (the tutor was part of the DoE team that developed the criteria for assessment) and the Hedgerow Survey Handbook (second edition) that was edited by the tutor. But it is also fundamental to the course that a wider context is explored and discussed and novel approaches to survey and data treatment will be presented. This forms part of the tutor's PhD and will offer a unique opportunity to gain a deeper appreciation of the landscape-wide patterns and historical origins of the hedgrow. The use of photography, GPS, data analysis and mapping will also be covered.

Barry Wright is a professional ecologist working in consultancy. He has a strong interest in hedgerow ecology and history and is studying for a PhD investigating woodland indicator species. He is an experienced tutor and has written widely on hedges and hedgerow survey techniques.
