Identifying plants vegetatively can be daunting initially but becomes easy with practice! This intensive course is aimed at everyone who would like to be able to identify plants accurately outside the flowering season. We will use the recently published Vegetative Key to the British Flora (written by the course tutor) and examine diagnostic features such as leaf shape, hairs and presence of latex to ensure that British field identification can now be comfortably carried out at most times of the year. The course will be a blend of workshops and field visits designed to improve botanical field skills across a wide range of higher plants and help professionals and volunteers alike to become more confident in identification using vegetative characters.

John Poland is a keen naturalist with a particular interest in botany and is the senior author of the Vegetative Key to the British Flora (2009). He is the BSBI Referee for Vegetative Identification and works as a Director and Principal Ecologist at Hampshire Ecological Services Ltd based in Southampton.
