Using digital maps and GPS in fieldwork: a practical guide for teachers

Shows publication OP126

How can ICT be used in fieldwork?

Based on a 12-month project into using two strands of ICT (digital maps and global positing systems) carried out by FSC in 2007, this booklet describes in detail some of the learning activities that have been developed by Geography tutors at our Field Centres.

Contents include:

  • Geocaching - creating educational geotrails
  • Using GPS with Google Earth
  • Adding value to geographical transects - using the example of a CBD transect
  • Using the area function of GPS - using the example of an investigation into counter-urbanisation and land use
